Liposuction

Fat Removal

Artboard 1 copy 5.jpg

Liposuction is the suction assisted removal of fat which is out of proportion with the rest of the body, or sculpturing.  Liposuction is not a weight reducing procedure.  The results of liposuction are permanent as the fat does not replace itself.  Fat cells are removed permanently with liposuction, so should you gain weight following the procedure, you will still have an improvement in proportion.

Dr van der Poel performs a Tumescent method of liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is a technique which injects an infiltration solution in large volume. The solution contains local anaesthetic and adrenaline to cut back on bleeding, and decrease pain.  The area for liposuction is marked carefully prior to surgery with the patient standing by marking a “contour map”. A Cannula is used to aspirate fat from two directions to prevent grooves, through small stab incisions. These small stab incisions are sutured following the liposuction and are treated with the RegimA scar repair once healed.

Following the procedure, the patient is placed in a pressure garment to prevent swelling and bruising and giving a smoother result.  The garment is worn day and night for three weeks, and then during the day for three weeks.  Swelling takes approximately six weeks to settle with the final result being at three months post-surgery.  The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. You will recover overnight in hospital and be given pain medication to take home.

In the first consultation Dr van der Poel will be able to get a good idea of your concerns as well as your expectations of the procedure. Dr van der Poel likes to see the patient for a second consultation in the week prior to the procedure to discuss any last-minute questions. Dr van der Poel takes time during his consultations to listen to your concerns and ensure that you are both on the same page.

You will see Dr van der Poel one week following the procedure to remove your sutures, thereafter every two weeks or as required.  We recommend the RegimA Scar repair cream which is stocked at our rooms, this will be applied to the scars from six weeks post operatively.

When you make your booking you will be given pre-operative instructions which will include medications and supplements to avoid prior to surgery since they can increase bleeding.  Should you have any concerns or questions you are welcome to call the rooms or send an email and we will be happy to assist.
